One of the most famous Indian laureates and writers, Munshi Premchand was better known for one of the most celebrated modern Hindustani literature pieces written by him in his time. Originally named Dhanpat Rai Shrivastav, he began writing under the pen name “Nawab Rai” and subsequently shifted to “Premchand”. Along with being a writer he was also a distinguished dramatist and a novelist who has published about more than a dozen novels and more than 250 short stories along with translations of famous literature pieces from all around the world.
One of the most notable works of Munshi Premchand include Godaan, Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Karmbhoomi, etc which have earned him great awards along with the title of being known as the “Upanyas Samrat” (“Emperor among Novelists”) by some Hindi writers.
He is considered to be one of the first Indian writers whose works featured realism. He mainly depicted the problems of the poor and the urban middle-class. His works were mainly focused on arousing public awareness through connection to masses and that is why many of his writings revolved around common but important issues and problems relating to corruption, feudal system, inequality, Indian freedom struggle movement, etc.
