Innovation Through Snake Inspired Robots
Robots. That word is one of the few words in the English language that has the capability to get a person instantly excited. People have dreamt of having robots that are interactive with human and having a symbiotic relationship with them. The National Robotics Initiative or NRI is an organize who’s objective is to bring this dream to reality, by working on improve the capabilities and usability of the existing robot models.
The organization funds research projects pertaining to robotics, especially if they hold the potential to increase impact of humans through manufacturing, apace and sea exploration, sustainable agriculture, transportation, etc.
The Carnegie Mellon University and their Robotics Institute showcased a robotic design inspired by Snakes on an event hosted by the National Robotics Initiative. The robot was just like a snake in its movements and ability to move into tightly packed and small spaces. The robot was able to access places that were too small to be accessed by humans or conventional machinery.
The biggest advantage that this robot will give people will be its this very ability to get into tight spots, giving it access to make parts for aircrafts and rescuing someone stuck in closed off places. Through the grant he has now received from the NRI, the maker of the robot now has a shot at collaboration with Johns Hopkins and Vanderbilt Universities, to open windows for surgeries and other medical procedures.
The robot was designed and created by Howie Choset.
